Residential Electric Rates

The residential electric rate is made up of three components: The Service Charge, the Energy Charge and the Energy Cost Adjustment (ECA). The following is an example of residential electric Rate Number 10. See our complete listing of CFU electric rates for other rates.

Service Charge
The service charge is applied on each metered service. This charge covers CFU's overhead costs associated with meter reading, customer services, billing, service calls, and meter maintenance. The monthly service charge for residential customers is $6.82.

Energy Charge
The energy charge is the amount you pay for each kilowatt hour that you use. The rate is broken up into two blocks with the rate per kilowatt hour declining with the higher block of consumption. The rate per kilowatt hour (kWh) is also different for summer and winter.

Rates
First 800 kWh consumed: 7.4¢ per kWh
All Over 800 kWh consumed: 5.7¢ per kWh (Winter, Oct-May)
All Over 800 kWh consumed: 7.4¢ per kWh (Summer, June-Sept)

Energy Cost Adjustment (ECA)
Prior to each billing month a calculation is made to determine the adjustment amount to be charged for each energy unit consumed during that billing period. Since the CFU electric rate structure includes fuel cost recovery, only a portion of energy costs will be collected through the application of the energy adjustment clause.

For purposes of calculating the adjustment, energy costs includes the following:
1) Cost of fuel delivered to the generation facility.
2) Cost of purchased power, excluding any demand charges.
3) A deduction for the cost of producing kWh volumes sold to wholesale customers.

The ECA for January 2010 is $0.019 per kWh.

How to Calculate Your Electric Costs
If a residence consumed 1305 kWh during the month of January, the electric cost would be calculated using the winter rate as shown above:

Service Charge $6.82
First 800 kWh X $0.074 $59.20
Next 505 kWh X $0.057 $28.79
ECA=$0.008/kWh $10.44
Local Option Tax (2%) $2.10
Total Cost: $107.35
